Supports Oakland Schools
IIn Oakland, the NetDay AmeriCorps Bridge Project facilitated learning using
technology to inspire enthusiasm in teachers and students in Oakland Unified
School District. The Oakland team members functioned as leaders, co-workers,
educators, students, facilitators, and problem-solvers in order to effectively
serve and unite the community.
Community Profile Oakland Unified School District serves a
diverse population of 55,000 students in an urban community
located near San Francisco, CA. More than 60% of Oakland students
are eligible for the free and reduced lunch program, and 48%
of students come from households receiving Aid to Families
with Dependent Children.
NetDay Difference NetDay AmeriCorps members provided daily,
ongoing support for teachers to integrate technology into the
curriculum in the classroom or the computer lab. AmeriCorps Members
worked in the following Oakland schools: Cox Elementary School,
Carter Middle School, Calvin Simmons Middle School, Westlake
Middle School, Life Academy, Castlemont High School, and McClymonds
Senior High.
Providing Students With
Safe Havens During the school year, AmeriCorps members
ran after school computer classes for students about Internet
research, general computing, or math/science instruction. Students
were excited and challenged by the after school programs—and
their
parents knew they were safe and productive after school.
Helping OTX-West Put Computers
Student Homes Throughout the year, NetDay AmeriCorps Members
volunteered at OTX-West, a community organization that collects
and refurbishes used computers and then provides them to Oakland
public schools and Oakland students. Members helped clean computers
and ran take-home lab trainings for students and families who
received OTX computers.
